Why the Catholic Church?

Common Questions

"There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be."
 –  Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

Bishop Sheen went on to write, These millions can hardly be blamed for hating Catholics because Catholics "adore statues"; because they "put the Blessed Mother on the same level with God"; because they say "indulgence is a permission to commit sin"; because the Pope "is a Fascist"; because the "Church is the defender of Capitalism." If the Church taught or believed any one of these things it should be hated, but the fact is that the Church does not believe nor teach any one of them. It follows then that the hatred of the millions is directed against error and not against truth. As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do.

As noted by Bishop Sheen above, there are common areas of questions that are of concern at first glance, but begin to make sense once you begin to understand the underlying meaning. These are some of the questions that people frequently ask:

The Catholic honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Isn't that making her equal to God?

Praying to the Saints. Isn't that necromancy as forbidden in the Bible?
Including follow-up questions:
 – OK, praying to a Saint isn't necromancy. But praying to them is raising them to the level of God.
 – But St. Paul tells us that there is one mediator between us and God, the man Jesus Christ. Why should I request a saint to pray for me, when I can just go straight to Jesus?
 – How can they hear us? They are not God, they are creatures like us. So many people in the world praying to them at the same time, constantly. It must be a buzz. How can they make sense of it all?
